SAN
ANTONIO
______________rodeo
information
The San Antonio Rodeo is kind of a big deal around these parts. So much so that the four-time NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs are basically kicked out of the AT&T Center for the month of February. They call it their “Rodeo Road Trip.”
As serious as the city of San Antonio takes their basketball, the rodeo might be on a whole other level. People plan their entire year around the month of February. All over the city, people will enter their best livestock just to get a special ribbon saying that they raised their animal quite nicely. They’ll sit around anxiously waiting to see which one of their favorite cowboys will be able to hold on to a bull for eight seconds and live to tell the tale of it another day. Others just like to go out and roll back the clock while enjoying a corn dog before jumping on a carnival ride.
To some, this might not be the greatest idea of fun, but the San Antonio area loves everything about its annual rodeo. It represents what this great city and state are all about. The livestock shows that we are a type of people who will nurture an animal into the best they can be, the rodeo cowboys show how it is to be brave and tough. The carnival shows that no matter how big and bad Texans might be, we still have a side that likes to have fun.
Since 1950 the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo has been entertaining hundreds of thousands of people from, not just the San Antonio area, but from all over the state and even the world. In 2005, the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo was voted the Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year by the Professional Rodeo and Cowboys Association (PRCA) and has won every year since. In 2008, the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo was inducted into the PRCA Hall of Fame.
The 2011 Reserve Grand Champion, exhibited by Connor Caraway, brought in $45,000 and the grand total for all Junior Livestock Auctions was nearly $3.7 million. The Western Art Auction also scored big with customers and donors with the Grand Champion piece selling for over $18,000 and a grand total of $290,295 which was distributed to the top 25 student artists in the form of scholarships.
